Arrest warrant issued against Khaleda Zia in Comilla

A Comilla court on Monday issued an arrest warrant against Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia and 77 others in a case of arson attack that killed eight people and injured 20 others in February 2015 during BNP-led 20-party alliance’s anti-government agitations.
Comilla district and sessions judge Jesmeen Ara Begum passed the order around noon, said the court’s public prosecutor Mostafizur Rahman.
The court also issued arrest warrant against BNP standing committee members Rafiqul Islam Mia and MK Anwar, vice-chairman Shawkat Mahmud and senior joint secretary Rizvi Ahmed, he said.
On February 3, 2015, a case was lodged with Chauddagram police naming 56 people, including former Jamaat-e-Islami MP Abdullah Mohammad Taher as prime suspect, and 20 unidentified people for throwing petrol bombs on a Dhaka-bound bus from Cox’s Bazar that killed eight people and injured 20 others.
Sub-inspector Mohammad Ibrahim of Chauddagram police had recently pressed charge-sheet before the court against 78 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat.
Six senior leaders of BNP and Jamaat, including Khaleda, were accused in the charge-sheet for ordering the attack, court officials said.
