Jamaat chief among seven leaders arrested

Police on Monday night arrested seven leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, including its chief Maqbul Ahmad, during a raid on a house at Uttara in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner (detective branch) Abdul Baten confirmed the news of the arrest and said that the Jamaat leaders were holding a meeting.
The arrested also include Jamaat secretary general Shafiqur Rahman, nayebe amir Mia Golam Parwar, Chittagong city amir Mohammad Shahjahan, secretary Nazrul Islam and Chittagong south district amir Zafar Sadek, central Jamaat staff Nazrul Islam, said a Jamaat central publicity department official.
Police also picked up the house owner, Naosher Alam, and a driver, Jamaat leaders said.
Metropolitan police officials, however, confirmed the political identity of only Maqbul, Shafiqur and Parwar among the arrested.
‘We will interrogate them and disclose the matter later,’ Baten said responding to a question as to the allegation under which they were arrested.
Uttara Model Police Station officer-in-charge Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui told New Age that the detective branch of police arrested the nine including seven Jamaat leaders during the raid on the second floor flat of house 3 of road 6 of Uttara sector 6.
The raid was conducted between 8:00pm and 8:30pm, he said, adding that the arrested were taken to the office of the metropolitan police’s detective branch in the capital.
Maqbul was elected Jamaat chief last year, after execution of the then Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami in May last year on charge of 1971 war crimes.
In a statement Jamaat nayebe amir Mujibur Rahman protested at the arrest of Jamaat central leaders and demanded their immediate release.
He announced countrywide protests for today.
