RAID ON EXTREMIST DEN Woman surrenders with three children

Police concluded ‘Operation Melted Ice’ on Monday evening after Khadiza Akhter, younger sister of extremist suspect Nurul Islam Marzan, surrendered to the law enforcement agency along with her three children in Jessore.
Nurul Islam Marzan was also a key figure in coordinating the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in the capital’s Gulshan on July 1, 2016.
Khadiza is also the wife of another Gulshan attack suspect Hadisur Rahman Sagor, said Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit deputy commissioner Muhammad Mohibul Islam Khan.
The CTTC unit was hunting for Sagor in connection with the case, the officials said.
Sagor’s wife surrendered to the police about 3:00pm on Monday, said Azmal Huda, officer in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
Ekramul Habib, additional deputy inspector general of Khulna police range, said they concluded the operation while Azmal Huda said preparation of filing a case was going on.
In a briefing after the operation, the police officials said bomb disposal unit disposed three suicidal vests recovered from the residence.
Mikail, a rickshaw puller who live a thatched house by the side the residence, said the three children of Khadiza — Sumaya, Suraya and Raju — used to play with his children.
The law enforcement agencies cordoned the four–storey building on Nawapara Road suspecting Khadiza’s presence since 2:00am on Monday.
Three sisters of former ward councillor of Jessore Municipality are the owners of the pink-coloured building.
Marzan’s sister Khadiza was residing on the first floor on rent for one year along with her husband and children. Her husband works with an herbal company although the name of the company was unknown.
Several teams of the police, including members of SWAT, were carrying out operations at the building, said superintendent of police Anisur Rahman.
None were allowed to enter the area of operation until 11:15am. Police allowed journalists in the area
afterwards and the police were seen to use loud speaker urging the inmates to to come out of the residence.
The Jessore police chief said they wanted to talk to Khadiza over phone as they wanted to help her.
‘Please come out considering the future of your children,’ he continued on the megaphone. On the television footage, Khadiza was seen crying and later she came out without any trouble.
