ATTACK ON HINDUS ‘Facebook user’ Titu arrested

Police arrested Titu Ray, the lone accused in a case of defaming Islam and its prophet in a facebook post that led to an arson attack on houses of Hindus in village Thakurpara in Rangpur, in Nilphamari early Tuesday.
‘A team of Rangpur police arrested Titu at one of his relatives’ house at village Golna under Jalldhaka upazilla in Nilphamri. We have been interrogating him and would disclose our findings in a press conference soon,’ Kotowali police station inspector (investigation) Azizul Islam told New Age.
The police had earlier said that they suspected that the facebook account in the name of Titu might be fake. ‘We, however, have been examining the matter,’ he said.
A local trader, Alamgir Hossain, had filed the case against Titu with Gangachara Police Station on November 5, accusing him of making a post on facebook hurting Islamic religious sentiments.
Titu’s family, however, claimed he was illiterate and it was not possible for him to make any comment on facebook or using any electronic device.
Meanwhile, home minister Mohammad Asaduzaman Khan and inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque visited the affected village Thakurpara and talked to the victim families.
He assured the affected villagers that all the perpetrators of the arson attack would be arrested.
‘Bangabandhu’s Bangladesh is a non-sectarian country and a land of religious harmony. A group is always involved in conspiracy to create a restless situation in the country,’ the minister said.
He said that the group had earlier committed attacks at Ramu in Cox’s Bazar and Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria in the same way.
The minister said that law enforcing agencies were ready to foil any such further attempt.
Later, he addressed a public rally at Harkoli Madrasha field near Thakurpara.
Youth and sports state minister Biren Sikdar, chairman of standing committee on home affairs and lawmaker for Rangpur- 4 Tipu Munshi and IGP Shahidul Haque addressed the meeting with superintendent of police Mizanur Rhaman in the chair.
A suspected attacker was killed and twenty others were injured as the police opened fire on a mob that attacked the houses of Hindus and torched many of them Friday afternoon.
The mob set fire on ten houses and vandalized seven houses including two temples.
The Gangachara and Rangpur Sadar police said they had so far arrested 100 people in the past four days in connection with the attack on Friday.
New Age correspondent in Jhenaidah reported that several hundred people, irrespective of caste and creed, gathered at Jhenaidah head post office intersection where they formed a human chain protesting at attack on Hindus at Thakurpara.
The organisers, under the banner of Jhenaidah Puja Udjapan Parishad, also brought out a procession in the district town demanding exemplary punishment of the perpetrator.
