PM questions courts’ spending time over trifles

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday questioned spending time over trifle matters by the courts instead of disposing of urgent cases pending with them.
‘There are tens of thousands of cases pending with the courts in the country while the courts spend time hearing trifle matters like a writ petition on whether children would sit for an examination or not,’ she said in parliament.
She said that there were many urgent cases like the arrest of extremists and judicial confirmation of death sentences pending with the Supreme Court.
‘There is no time for these cases. Why the courts are passing time with those insignificant matters,’ the prime minister asked.
She came up with the statements as Jatiya Party lawmaker Kazi Firoz Rashid standing on a point of order raised question of legitimacy for holding primary education completion and junior school certificate examinations.
He said that this sort of examinations were contrary to the constitution.
The prime minister replied that there were some people whose only
job was to file writ petitions and raising questions.
She asked whether the students did not become attentive to their study due to the examinations held after Class V and Class VIII and whether the pass rate in SSC examination was did not increase.
She said that it would be a matter of great regret if the court delivered judgement to stop these examinations.
Regarding the introduction of PEC and JSC examinations, the prime minister said that she is responsible for introducing the new systems of board examinations in class V and class VIII.
