AL’s allies slam govt for price spiral

The partners of the ruling Awami League-led alliance on Monday criticised the government for the price spiral of essentials.
At a meeting of the alliance at AL president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office, they said that the common people were suffering much to run their families because of skyrocketing price hike of essentials, including rice and onion.
The alliance leaders said that the price hike ahead of the upcoming general elections would put a negative impact.
Emerging from the meeting Jatiya Party faction general secretary Sheikh Shahidul Islam told New Age that most of the alliance leaders expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s failures to control the price hikes of the essentials.
They also said that the government failed to control the price hikes although the alliance leaders at the November 2 meeting expressed their dissatisfaction and called on the government to take immediate steps to control the price spiral, he said.
Samyabadi Dal general secretary Dilip Barua, also former industries minister, said that people would not vote for the alliance if the government failed to arrest the price spiral.
‘A negative impact is a must if the price spiral is not arrested,’ he said.
Communist Kendra joint convenor Asit Baran Roy said that they urged the government to refrain from increasing holding tax in different cities before the next general elections.
‘The government should not increase the holding tax before the general elections as such a decision would cause a furore among the voters,’ he said.
After the meeting, alliance spokesperson Mohammad Nasim said that the leaders unanimously decided that the government should unearth the alleged wealth of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia and her family in Saudi Arabia.
‘The government and the Anti-Corruption Commission should look into the alleged wealth of Khaleda Zia and her family in Saudi Arabia,’ he told reporters at a briefing.
The meeting also condemned the unilateral decision of the Unites States government which announced Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Awami League central leaders Ahmad Hossain, Khaled Mahmud Chowdhury, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal factions presidents Hasanul Haq Inu and Sharif Nurul Ambia, Tarikat Federation president Nazibul Boshar Maizbhandari, Workers Party of Bangladesh politburo member Mustafa Lutfullah, among, attended the meeting.
