Overloaded truck causes collapse of bailey bridge in Dinajpur

An overloaded truck carrying 700 sack of fertilizer caused collapse of the bailey bridge on River Kakra at Chirirbandar of Dinajpur on Tuesday snapping communication between Dinajpur and Parbatipur.

Witnesses said the bridge collapsed at around 7:00am when loaded truck was crossing it. The truck carrying 700 sacks of fertilizer weighing 35 tonnes fell into the river.

Witness Golap Roy said he was practicing marathon on the bank of the river and all of a sudden heard a big bang. ‘Rushing the spot we saw the truck fell into the river and we rescued the truck driver and his assistant.’

The driver’s assistant Badsha Mia said they were heading for Current Hat of Chirirbandar with 700 sacks of fertilizer. ‘The driver could not understand that the bridge was risky because of heavy fog.

Locals said the bridge was risky for long and body bothered about it.

The roads and highways department in Dinajpur said the bridge had served out its life span long ago. They said warning signs were put up on both ends of the bridge banning vehicles weighing more five tonnes.
