Baby dies falling off mother’s lap during mugging

A six-month-old baby boy died after falling from a rickshaw as a mugger snatched the bag of his mother when they were travelling on a road in the capital’s Doyaganj on Monday morning.
The police launched an investigation to catch the snatcher responsible for the death of Arafat.
The incident took place near Doyaganj intersection about 6:15am as they were on the way to Shanir Akhra from Sadarghat.
The family told reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital that the mother and the son were riding a rickshaw when a mugger appeared and snatched the bag of Arafat’s mother.
Arafat fell down on the road from her lap and got critically injured. He was rushed to DMCH where the duty doctor declared him dead about 7:00am.
The victim’s father Shah Alam Gazi said that they had come from Shariatpur to see the physician of his eldest son Al Amin, 4. The mugger took away the money they brought for the treatment.
Demra-zone senior assistant commissioner Iftekharul Islam hoped that they would be able to catch the perpetrator very soon.
New Age reported in mid-November that relaxed security measures especially in early morning made Dhaka residents vulnerable as organised criminal gangs prowl the city mostly during that time of the day.
Many victims and city dwellers have alleged that police members on duty usually neglect their duty in the early morning as they often leave their posts or sleep and the muggers benefit from the police negligence.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials also identify early morning, especially between 3:00am and 7:00am, as the most vulnerable time for residents.
On October 8, Daffodil International University computer science and engineering student Khandaker Abu Talha, 22, was stabbed to death just 50 yards from his house at Tikatuli about 6:15am, when the muggers tried to rob his mobile phone and wallet.
