Withdraw legal notice against Hasina: AL

The ruling Awami League on Wednesday called on the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to withdraw the legal notice served against its party president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina on a defamation charge.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s lawyer AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan sent a legal notice on Wednesday to the prime minister for ‘defamatory’ remarks about accumulation of huge amount of wealth in Saudi Arabia by Khaleda and her family members.
Awami League Publicity and Publication Affairs Secretary Hasan Mahmud threatened legal action if BNP would not withdraw the legal notice sent to Sheikh Hasina, while speaking at a press conference at Sheikh Hasina’s political office in Dhanmondi-3 in the evening.
Earlier in the day, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, while addressing a press conference, said a legal notice has been sent to Hasina alleging that the prime minister brought false claims against Khaleda and defamed the BNP chief.
On December 7, at a press conference at the Ganabhaban, Sheikh Hasina spoke about Khaleda’s wealth stashed in the Middle East.
The next day, BNP shot back claiming the allegations were baseless and warned of legal steps.
Presidium member of the Awami League and agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury, organising secretary AKM Enamul Karim Shamim, office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap and others attended the AL press conference.
