Teachers continue hunger strike ignoring Nahid’s assurance

The teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions who are on a hunger strike on Tuesday ignored education minister Nurul Islam Nahid's assurance, and vowed to continue their strike until an assurance is made to meet their demand with a timeframe.

Leaders of the demonstration arranged under the banner of 'Non-MPO Educational Institution Teachers-Staff Federation' said they have decided to continue the strike on the Jatiya Press Club premises as the minister did not give them any specific date or timeframe.

The teachers also claimed that the minister even did not break their hunger strike.

They said they will continue their strike until their demand is fulfilled.

Meanwhile, at least 35 teachers, including federation president Golam Mahmuddunabi, fell sick and they were taken to hospital.

Earlier, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid went to the Jatiya Press Club around 11:00am and urged the teachers and employees for returning to their work breaking the hunger strike.

Nahid also gave them assurance of fulfilling their demand.

He informed that finance minister have agreed to materialise their demand.

‘But it will take time as we have to go through the procedures,’ said the minister.

The teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions began fast-unto-death from Sunday morning demanding their regularisation under Monthly Pay Order of the government.

Earlier, they went on movement under the banner of 'non-MPO educational institution teacher-employee federation' in front of Jatiya Press Club on December 26. Hundreds of teachers and employees from across the country joined the strike.
