DNCC BY-ELECTION BNP, allies to work for single mayoral candidate

The political alliance led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday decided to work together for a single candidate in the upcoming mayoral by-election to Dhaka North City Corporation.
Senior leaders of the alliance in a meeting with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair also decided not to take part in the next general election if held without participation of Khaleda, said an alliance leader who attended the meeting.
The meeting also decided to hold two separate rallies of lawyers and Islamic parties in the capital soon, the leader said.
The leader said that former judges of the Supreme Court would be invited to the lawyers’ rally to highlight that the cases filed against Khaleda were ‘unlawful’ and ‘politically motivated’.
The rally of Islamic parties would ‘counter a recent rally organised by a Islami Oikya Jote faction led by Abdul Latif Nezami’, which demanded trial for people responsible for laundering money to Saudi Arabia, pointing fingers to the BNP chief and her family members.
Islamic Parties’ rally would also be a show of support of Muslims for the alliance, said the alliance leader.
The meeting that started around 9:20pm at Khaleda’s Gulshan office ended about 11:15pm.
Abdul Halim of Jamaat-e-Islami, Andaleev Rahman Partha of Bangladesh Jatiya Party, Redwan Ahmed of Liberal Democratic Party, Mostafa Zamal Haider of Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar), Ahmed Abdul Kader of Khelafat Majlish, Fariduzzaman Farhad of National Peoples’ Party, Saifuddin Moni of Democratic League and Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan of Bangladesh National Awami Party, among others, attended the meeting.
