Status quo on felling Jessore road trees

The High Court on Thursday asked the government to maintain status quo on the decision of felling century-old trees on the Jessore-Benapole Highway for six months.

The court also asked the government to explain why it would not be directed to construct a four-lane road on the highway protecting thousands of trees on the both sides.

Secretaries to the bridge division and environment, the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police in Jessore were asked to reply the rule.

The bench of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir issued the rule after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The petition was filed in the wake of protest against the government decision to cut down the trees under the project of upgrading Jessore-Benapole and Jessore-Khulna highways into four lanes.
