BCL ATTACK Students burn DU proctor’s effigy

Students against Repression, a platform of Dhaka University students, burnt an effigy of the university proctor, AKM Golam Rabbani, on Tuesday alleging that the proctor had ‘utterly failed’ to perform his duty and in demand of his immediate resignation.
The students, demanding punishment of Chhatra League leaders and activists for assaulting students, brought out a procession on the campus wearing colorful sunglass that signifies the blindness of the university administration and the visions of the students that the proctor feared to encounter, said Masud Al Mahadi, convener of the platform.
He further said the proctor, who was the chief custodian of the university’s security, failed to take any step against the Chhatra League assaulters.
The proctor had lost his right to remain in the post by charging the victims of creating unrest, he added.
Protestors ended their procession in front of the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture, where they burnt the effigy at about 1:30pm.
On January 23, waves of attacks launched by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists injured around 50 students, who were demonstrating at Dhaka University demanding withdrawal of a case against them and punishment of the BCL activists, who assaulted and molested students.
Ruling Awami League-backed Chhatra League activists on the day also carried out one after another attacks brandishing sharp weapons, iron rods, cricket stumps and hockey sticks to rescue the vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzaman and proctor Golam Rabbani, who were held captive by the protesters.
