PRESIDENTIAL POLL AL nominates Hamid again

The ruling Awami League on Wednesday nominated president Md Abdul Hamid again as its candidate to contest the presidential election scheduled for February 18.
The parliamentary board of the party, headed by its president and prime
minister Sheikh Hasina, picked Hamid for the post in a meeting held at Gono Bhaban, said AL general secretary Obaidul Quader.
Incumbent president Hamid took office on April 24, 2013, and his five-year term would expire on April 23.
According to article 123 of the constitution, presidential election should be held between 90 and 60 days before the five-year term of the president expires.
The next president will be elected for a five-year term, and the tenure of the president will be until the last year of the next government.
On January 25, the Election Commission announced the schedule of the presidential poll.
According to the schedule, the aspirants will collect nomination papers on February 5 and it will be scrutinised by EC officials on February 7.
The last date of withdrawing candidature is February10.
On February 24, 2013, former speaker Hamid took office as the country’s 20th president.
A former leader of ruling Awami League from the Kishoreganj district, Hamid was elected uncontested.
