BNP stages hunger strike demanding Khaleda’s release

As part of its countrywide scheduled programme, Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and activists are observing token hunger strike in front of Press Club in the capital demanding unconditional release of their party chairperson Khaleda Zia who was jailed for five years in a graft case on Thursday.

Several hundred leaders and activists, including party standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, joined the programme amid tight security by police.

The token hunger strike started around 10:00am which will continue till 4:00pm.

BNP’s different district and city units are also scheduled to observe similar programmes at their convenient time and places.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the BNP leaders and activists staged a sit-in programme in front of the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in the city.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they would continue their movement until release of Khaleda Zia from jail.

A special judge’s court in Dhaka on Thursday handed Khaleda five years’ jail in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case and soon after delivering the judgment she was led away to Old Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road.
