KHALEDA CONVICTION Certified copy of verdict released

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s lawyers began preparing appeal against her sentence and petition for her bail in Zia Orphanage Trust case on Monday after getting the certified copy of judgement, pronounced 11 days ago jailing her for five years.
The lawyers did not disclose much about the verdict saying that they would scrutinise the full verdict.
On February 8, Dhaka Special Judge’s Court judge Md Akhtaruzzaman jailed sentenced Khaleda, also former prime minister, to rigorous imprisonment for five years and jailed her eldest son Tarique and five others to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years.
Khaleda’s lawyer Abdur Rezzaque Khan, just before the pronouncement of the verdict, had requested the court to supply the certified copy as soon as the verdict got delivered, the lawyers said.
They, however, received the copy of the 1,174-page verdict finally at about 4:20pm on Monday, delaying the appeal and the petition for bail.
‘We will discuss with the senior lawyers for the next course of action,’ said Aminul Islam, one of Khaleda’s defence lawyers.
A court official said the 632-page original verdict transformed into 1,174-page one because of ‘page setup.’
Khaleda’s lawyers Sanaullaha Mia and Masud Ahmed Talukder received the certified copy and alleged that the court made ‘a long drama’ in supplying the certified copy.
In the 1,174-page verdict, six pages contained the order sentencing Khaleda, Tarique and five others.
Sanaullaha also said that they were not sure when the appeal would be filed as they needed to scrutinise the certified copy.
Earlier in the morning of Monday, the judge said that the certified copy possibly would be handed over by 5:00pm.
Khaleda was sent to the old central jail on Nazimuddin Road in the city few minutes after the verdict was pronounced.
