ATTACK ON STUDENT DU to expel 7 BCL leaders

The disciplinary committee of the Dhaka University on Monday recommended expulsion of seven Bangladesh Chhatra League unit leaders for torturing disaster management and science second-year student Ehsan Rafiq damaging hi eye for seeking his calculator to be returned.
A meeting of the committee also recommended that the seven leaders of the Salimullah Muslim Hall unit of the ruling Awami League-backed student body, be expelled from the dormitory.
University proctor Golam Rabbani said that the decision was made in a disciplinary committee meeting held on Monday with university vice-chancellor Akhtaruzzaman in the chair. 
The committee recommended that hall unit Chhatra League member Samiul Islam Sami of sociology department, hall committee member Ahsan Ullah of philosophy department, its assistant secretary Ruhul Amin of mass communication and journalism, deputy training secretary Mehedi Hasan Himel of Urdu department and assistant secretary Fardin Ahmed of
public administration to be expelled from the university for two years. All of them were second year students. 
Hall unit Chhatra League vice-president Ariful Islam, fourth-year student of Institute of Education and Research, was recommended to be expelled for one year from the university. 
Rabbani also said that the connection of the seven students in the torture was proved by the Salimullah Muslim Hall’s investigative body.
Now the fate of these students would be finalised in the syndicate meeting, scheduled for today.
Earlier on February 6, Chhatra League activists of Salimullah Muslim Hall beat up Ehsan Rafiq allegedly for seeking his calculator to be returned. The torture damaged his sight in the right eye.
Ehsan is now staying at his village home in Jhenaidah and preparing to leave for India for better treatment as the cornea and orbit of the right eye was grievously injured being punched indiscriminately.
Bangladesh Chhatra League activists’ ceaseless infighting as well as attack on common students on campuses across the country disrupted academic atmosphere time and again in the past six months. At least five activists of the organisation were killed in infighting during the period.
Earlier on January 15, Chhatra League activists assaulted male students and sexually assaulted female students at Dhaka University who were on protests in front of the vice-chancellor’s office demanding cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges with the university.
On January 23, Waves of attacks launched by Chhatra League activists injured about 50 students who were demonstrating at Dhaka University for withdrawal of a case against them and punishment of the Chhatra activists who assaulted students on January 15.
On January 24, at least 13 leaders and activists of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front were injured as Chhatra League activists attacked them at Murari Chand College in Sylhet city where front activists brought out a procession marking its anniversary.
On January 25, at least 13 students of Chittagong University were injured when Chhatra League activists swooped on protesters denouncing attack on Dhaka University students.
On January 29, Progressive Students Alliance activists came under attack by Chhatra League during their strike at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology denouncing attack on Dhaka University students.
