Act on situation, Khaleda asks party policymakers

Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s imprisoned chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday advised her party’s policymakers to take steps ‘according to the given situation’ over changing the course of the current movement for her ‘unconditional’ release from jail.
Khaleda made the suggestion when a delegation of the party leaders, led by secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, called her on at the erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road in the Old Town of Dhaka to know about her wellbeing.
The delegates apprised her of the ongoing movement and legal battle for her
release and the ‘stance’ of the government.
Members of the party’s highest policymaking body, national standing committee, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury were in the delegation. Khaleda’s private secretary ABM Abdus Sattar accompanied them.
The BNP leaders entered the prison at about 3:15pm and talked to the party chief for more than an hour.
This was the first visit of the party’s senior leaders particularly the top policymakers to meet Khaleda after she landed in the jail on February 8 after a Dhaka Special Judge’s Court sentenced her to five years jail in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
After the visit, a standing committee member told New Age that the BNP chairperson asked them to decide on the future course of action mutually.
Asked whether Khaleda gave any instruction about changing mode of current movement, he said she told them to ‘act on the situation’.
The policymaker said the BNP chief knew well that her release on bail was being prolonged not due to the court but due to the government.
This issue was not ‘legal’ but ‘political,’ he quoted Khaleda as saying.
He, however, said the BNP chairperson was seen mentally strong and there was no sign of worry on her face.
She expressed satisfaction with the senior leaders’ performance in the current movement and taking decision jointly, the standing committee member said.
Khaleda, former prime minister, was enjoying facilities of division in the jail, the BNP senior leader said.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul told reporters that Khaleda asked them to continue the movement ‘peacefully’ without stepping into anybody’s provocation.
