Knee injury ruins Tamim’s IPL chances

The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Saturday said that opener Tamim Iqbal would require at least four to six weeks to recover from his knee injury, effectively ruling him out any outside chance of playing in the forthcoming Indian Premier League.
The 11th edition of the Indian Premier League
will be held from April 7 to May 27.
Speculation was rife at social media that Tamim could get a call up from Sunrisers Hyderabad to replace banned Australian opener David Warner.
But BCB physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury said that the southpaw was still nursing a left knee injury and needed a break for at least a month.
Debashis also revealed that Tamim’s rehabilitation had already been started and within a few weeks he would be completely fit to play again.
‘He has already started his rehabilitation from Friday. It will take four weeks as it usually takes three weeks to heal the injury,’ Debashis told reporters in Mirpur on Saturday.
‘Since the pain on his left knee is slight, we have taken decision to go ahead with conventional way. If we can continue it for four to six weeks then he will be completely recovered,’ he added.
Tamim, who was suffering from some minor injuries on his left knee before the start of the Nidahas Trophy, prolonged his injury while playing in the tri-series Twenty20 tournament in Sri Lanka last month.
The left-handed batsman took the flight to Pakistan straightway after completing the national duty in Sri Lanka to play the play-offs of the Pakistan Super League.
But Tamim could manage to play only a single match before injury forced him to fly to Thailand to consult with surgeons over there.
‘The problem was he didn’t get enough time for rest. I talked to his physio and he told me that he had to play [in Sri Lanka]. As he didn’t get proper treatment, his sting increased,’ Debashis added.
Debashis added that they gave him complete rest while he would be given physiotherapy in order to reduce his pain in the meantime.
‘We have given him rest so that he can recover from the injury.
‘We are not going to give him any medicine or injections. His knee will heal naturally. We’ll also give him physiotherapy,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Sunrisers on Saturday picked England batsman Alex Hales to replace their regular skipper David Warner has been banned from international cricket for a year over a ball-tampering scandal during the recent third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.
Hales was signed for 10 million rupees ($153,700) from the available player pool for this year’s IPL, the Indian cricket board said in a statement.
