HC asks why accident victim won’t get Tk 1 crore compensation

The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why directives should not be given to provide Tk 1 crore as compensation to Government Titumir College student Rajib Hasan who got his right arm lost being pressed between two buses in the city.

Following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Ruhul Kuddus Talukdar, an HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque asked the bus owners to bear the treatment cost of the victim.

The court also wanted to know why the authorities concerned should not be directed to effectively enforce the existing laws to ensure passengers' safety and to amend the laws and make new rules to prevent the reoccurrence of such incidents in the future.

Home, and road transport and bridges secretaries, inspector general of police and Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner and four others have been made respondents to the rule which is returnable in four weeks.

Ruhul Kuddus Kajol stood for himself while deputy attorney general Arbinda Kumar Roy represented the state.

On Tuesday, Rajib Hasan, a 2nd year student of Titumir College, was going to his college by a double-decker Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation bus. He was standing on the rear gate dangling his right hand outside as the bus was overcrowded.

When the bus got stranded at the Sonargaon crossing near Panthakunja park, a 'Sajan Paribahan' bus tried to make its way through the narrow space on between the BRTC bus and the footpath. However, Rajib's right hand was pressed in between the two buses and got severed from the elbow.

Being rescued, the victim was taken to MH Samorita Hospital at Panthapath where he was now undergoing treatment.
