Khaleda apparently fine: BSMMU director

Imprisoned Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s medical check-up was conducted amid tight security at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Saturday.
Khaleda, who had not been seen in public since her jailing in a graft case on February 8, seemed to be fit, said BSMMU hospital director Brigadier General Abdullah Al Harun.
Khaleda boarded on a black Pajero sport jeep having sticker of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on it with a heavy escort of law enforcers, including police and RAB, was taken to BSMMU from erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail in Old Dhaka around 11:30am.
Wearing a cream colour sari, she waved hands with a smiling face to waiting journalists and BSMMU officials after stepping out of the vehicle on the BSMMU premises.
She was first taken to the cabin block of the medical university as she entered through gate-3 of the institution. She was taken to cabin 512 for conducting necessary medical tests.
About 12:45pm, Khaleda went on foot to radiology and imaging department from the cabin block amid escort of law enforcers.
Patients and their attendants were seen standing on different floors of the medical university to have a glimpse of Khaleda.
At a briefing, BSMMU hospital director Harun said that Khaleda had been brought to radiology department to conduct some X-ray tests.
The reports would be prepared by Sunday and would be delivered to jail authorities, he informed.
Harun said that a four-member medical board was present during the tests which were conducted in presence of Khaleda’s personal doctors following her wish.
‘Apparently, she seemed to be fit,’ Harun said.
‘But the medical board can say what her health condition is,’ he said.
‘We kept a wheelchair for her but she went to the radiology department from the cabin block on foot and went back to the ambulance from there,’ he added.
Khaleda’s two lawyers Sanaullah Miah and Mahbub Uddin Khokon went to the cabin to meet her.
Khaleda’s daughter-in-law Sharmila Rahman and her granddaughters Zahia Rahman and Zafia Rahman met her at BSMMU, according to BNP chairperson’s press wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.
BNP leaders Moudud Ahmed, Amanullah Aman and Mahbub Uddin Khokon, among others, went to the medical university.
At least five leaders and activists, including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal assistant organising secretary Kazi Ifthekaruzzaman Shimul, were picked up by police as they shouted slogans inside and outside of the medical university while Khaleda was brought there and during conducting her medical tests, according to eyewitnesses and the party.
Entrance was restricted to BSMMU and treatment of patients was hampered.
Traffic congestion was created in different streets particularly at Shahbagh during taking Khaleda to and from BSMMU.
Khaleda left the medical university around 1:30pm after completing tests at radiology and imaging department.
Khaleda fell sick in the jail on March 29 and postponed a scheduled meeting with party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
On April 1, the government formed a medical team with four professors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital to examine her health and ensure her treatment in the jail.
On February 8, a Dhaka special court sentenced Khaleda to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, which BNP dubbed as politically motivated.
