AIT on newsprint imports to go: Muhith

Finance minister AMA Muhith on Monday said he would cut import duty on newsprint and realise value added tax from the private universities from the next fiscal year beginning July 1.
He also said he would impose tax on screening of televisions channels operated from India as he was talking with reporters after a pre-budget discussion with editors of the national dailies in the capital.
The discussion was attended among others by the Daily Star editor Mahfuz
Anam, Prothom Alo editor Motiur Rahman and Financial Express editor AHM Moazzem Hossain.
The newspapers owners and its executives have long been demanding withdrawal of tax from the import of newsprint.
Muhith said five per cent advanced income tax from the import of newsprint would be omitted and 12 per cent value added tax and other five per cent duties would be readjusted.
He said private universities would have to pay VAT from next fiscal.
In 2015, Muhith had made the announcement of brining private educational institutes under VAT net but held back of its implementation amid protests from students.
Muhith told the reporters that he would propose digitisation of television cable operation.
