Police arrested five transport workers Sunday night chasing a bus of Jatriseba Paribahan on Dhaka-Aricha highway at Dhamrai on the outskirts of the capital as they were allegedly raping a 24-year-old female readymade garment worker in the bus on her way home from her workplace.
All the five are transport workers and three of them are the staff of the bus, Dhamrai Police officer-in-charge Rezaul Haque said.
The arrested were Abdul Aziz, 25, son of Jasim Uddin of Deokhola under Phulbari in Mymensingh, Babu Mallick, 24, son of Shafi Mallick of village Kotapara under Chuadanga Sadar, Balaram, 20, son of Mohor Lal of Sarkarbari under Dimla in Nilphamari, Md Sohel Rana, 20, son of Kalu Mia of village Goail under Dhamrai in Dhaka, and Mokbul Hossain, 40, son of Raju Sardar of village Kelia under Dhamrai in Dhaka, police said.
The police officer, quoting the victim, said that the female worker finished her works at a garment factory at Shrirampur about 10:00pm, left her workplace and got on the Jatriseba Paribahan bus to return to her Islampur residence, about 10 kilometres away from her workplace.
Assistant sub-inspector Dinesh Ghosh said that the bus had three staff while two other transport workers got on the bus from Shrirampur. The victim became the lone passenger when others got off after sometime.
Later, the bus staff locked the door and windows of the bus, tied her hands and mouth and started raping her, he said.
A patrol team of Dhamrai
police led by sub-inspector Bhajan Roy, hearing the scream of a woman coming from the bus in Cosmos area on the highway, chased the bus, caught the five and rescued the victim at 11:30pm.
Transport workers Babu and Aziz raped her with others’ assistance, the police official said.
The victim lodged a case with the police early Monday and the police sent the five to court seeking a seven-day remand for them.
The court sent the five to jail and set Tuesday for hearing the remand petition.
Dinesh Ghosh said that they had sent the victim to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for medical tests.
