Khaleda will be out of jail before Eid, BNP hopes

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Wednesday expressed his hope that the party’s imprisoned chairperson Khaleda Zia would be released from the prison before forthcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
‘We don’t think that Madam (Khaleda) would remain in jail till Eid. She would definitely walk out of the jail before the Eid. We believe this,’ Fakhrul said.
Fakhrul came up with the remark while talking to journalists at Khaleda’s Gulshan office in the evening.
The secretary general said the six cases in which Khaleda Zia has been shown arrested were ‘baseless’.
Fakhrul also expressed hope that appeal filed in the Supreme Court challenging the lower court’s five-year imprisonment of Khaleda would go in favour of the BNP chief.
Asked about whether BNP would take part in the next local government elections, particularly in the Gazipur city poll scheduled for June 26, Fakhrul said after the recent Khulna city election it was evident that no election would be free and fair under the present government and the Election Commission.
He, however, said the party would discuss the issue anew and probably maintain new strategy if it join the Gazipur city election.
He also said that the chief election commissioner should quit his job following reported rigging and fraud in Khulna election.
