Four killed in Bandarban landslides

Four people, including children and women, were killed in landslides in Bandarban on Tuesday.
At Lama, three of a family died in a landslide around 1:00pm. 
They are Hanif, 30, son of Mainuddin, Razia Begum, 25, wife of Hanif, and their daughter Halima, 6, of Kalaya Para under Sharai union. 
Earlier, around 12 noon, Protima Rani Dey, 45, wife of Milan Kanti Dey of Kalaghata area of Bandarban Sadar was buried alive when a big chunk of mud collapsed on her tin-shed house.
Fire service and civil defence assistant director of Bandarban Sadar Iqbal Hossain said that the bodies were sent to Bandarban Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Bandarban deputy commissioner Md Aslam Hossain told New Age that incessant rainfall since Monday night caused the landslides and the loss of lives.
He said multiple landslides took place in different places of Ruma, Lama and Sadar upazilas.
All the upazila nirbahai officers were instructed to relocate people living in hilly areas to government primary schools to avoid any unwanted loss, said he.
The DC said that from Tuesday morning, the local administration using loudspeakers requested villagers to leave their vulnerable houses on hill slopes and move to safe shelters.
Meanwhile, road communication between Bandarban and Rangamati remained suspended since morning due to heavy rainfall and landslides at different spots on the road.
On May 28, 2018, four people were killed and one injured in a landslide while cutting hills in Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban.
In the year 2017, a total 13 people were killed in landslides in Bandarban. 
Illegal settlements on hill slopes and indiscriminate hill cutting were commonly blamed for the landslides in the hill districts in Chittagong region.
