Rain leaves Ctg life in tatters

Incessant rainfall for the last three days since Monday has caused inundation at many unions of different upazilas in Chittagong, leaving many people marooned.
People in the port city are also facing miseries due to traffic congestions caused by heavy showers. 
Patenga Met office assistant meteorologist Biswajit Chowdhury said that the rain was likely to continue for two to three more days due to monsoon and rain might be accompanied by thunder strikes. 
He said that on Wednesday the Met office recorded 40mm rainfall till 12 noon in the city, which was 252mm on Tuesday.
Shamim Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Raozan, told New Age that the condition deteriorated on Wednesday as heavy rain inundated many more unions. 
Some bridges and culverts collapsed due to the downpours while low-lying Raozan municipality is the worst affected.
Hundreds of people of Noajhishpur, Urkirchar, Purbo Guzra unions are facing immense suffering as crops and cattle have been damaged in most parts of these unions which went under water.
Binajuri, Dabua, Noapara, Chikadaer, Holdia, Noapara were also hit hard by the continuous rainfall, said the UNO.
As roads went under water in Raozan following heavy rainfall and onrush of water from the upstream, traffic on Chittagong -Rangamati road remained suspended since Tuesday morning.
Mohammad Mobarak Hossain, UNO of Satkania, told New Age that Nolua, Charati, Amilaesh and Bajalia unions were badly affected by the heavy rain as the three unions were near the River Sangu. 
If the rainfall continued, he feared, Nolua would face disastrous effects.
Before monsoon, all upazila chairman and officials of local administration were instructed to relocate people
to nearby shelters, he said, adding that all educational institutions were ready to accommodate people in case of any flooding.
Fatikchhari UNO Dipak Kumar Roy also said that the torrential rains submerged Samitirhat union as it was situated near the River Halda.
Roads in different parts of the upazila were also inundated after heavy rains.
The three days’ rainfall sent many places in the city and its adjoining areas under knee-deep water, causing immense sufferings to the residents.
Rain water and tidal water flooded many areas of the port city, including CDA residential area, Muradpur, Bohoddarhat, Bakolia, Agrabad, Halishahar, and Chwakbazar.
Suffering of the commuters, including office-goers, students and apparel factory workers, knew no bound following the 
downpour as vehicles were seen trapped in waterlogged areas.
