BNP suspects Indian HC’s role behind Khaleda’s conviction

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday said it suspected a role of ‘Indian High Commission in Dhaka’ over ‘sentencing’ the party’s chairperson, Khaleda Zia, in a case filed on ‘fabricated charges.’
BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing at the party’s central office said
He said Khaleda’s foreign legal consultant Lord Carlile during his visit is scheduled to address a news conference at Foreign Correspondent Club in New Delhi on July 13 over Khaleda Zia’s case and sentencing her to jail.
‘If Lord Carlile was denied Indian visa, then it will be proved that the Indian High Commission in Dhaka had a role behind sending Khaleda Zia to jail,’ Rizvi said.
The role of Indian High Commission was ‘unfortunate and aggressive,’ said Rizvi adding that the neighbouring country was trying to ‘interfere’
in Bangladesh’s internal politics.
He said a daily newspaper on Saturday published a news item quoting high level source of New Delhi that the Indian High Commission in Dhaka had sent strong recommendation to New Delhi for not allowing Khaleda’s legal consultant Lord Carlile in India.
The role of the Indian High Commission officials resembled colonial rulers when they helped an ‘unelected’ government to stick to power in Bangladesh, Rizvi said.
If the Indian HC became a colonial period governor house and started interfering in Bangladesh’s politics then the people should get it that the country’s independence and sovereignty became endangered, he added.
Mentioning that a few days ago prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s ICT affairs adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy branded the US ambassador in Dhaka, Marcia Bernicat, a ‘BNP spokesman,’ Rizvi questioned Joy that now what he would call the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
The senior joint secretary general criticised the PM’s another adviser HT Imam for speaking
at a discussion in India that BNP works against the
‘interest of India’ and is ‘pro-China’ and ‘pro-Pakistan’.
He said like HT Imam, ministers and leaders of Awami League created ‘nasty’ example of seeking mercy of the policymakers of India to keep Awami government in power again.
He called HT Imam an ‘opportunist’, and said Imam had conducted the function of oath taking of the cabinet following the brutal killing of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding anniversary.
