Floods situation worsens in Bogra, Jamalpur, Sirajganj

Floods situations in Bogra, Jamalpur and Sirajganj worsened on Sunday inundating more low lying areas as the Brahmaputa-Jamuna continued overflowing at many points, according to Flood Forecasting and Warning Center.
New areas have been flooded in the country’s central districts with the major rivers swelling due to onrush of floodwaters from India’s Assam province in the upstream, said FFWC officials.
FFWC executive engineer Arifuzzanman Bhuiyan told New Age that flooding in the northern districts started to recede and condition would improve soon as there was no rain in the upstream India.
‘In central zone, Jamuna and Brahmaputra were overflowing and inundating many low lying areas worsening the flood conditions,’ he said.
Floodwaters submerged many roads and low lying areas in Lalmonithat, Kurigram and Gaibandha, disrupting internal road communication. Many people of the affected districts have been marooned as their houses have been flooded.
According to FFWC, the Rivers Brahmaputa-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma are in rising trend and the Brahmaputra may become steady, while the Jamuna river may continue rising till 9:00am today.
The River Ganges-Padma might continue rising till 9:00am tomorrow, the summery report said.
New Age correspondent in Kurigram reported that at Kamarpur a diversion bridge on the Buringamari-Kurigram Road had been broken by floodwaters disrupting road communication in the area since Saturday.
Floodwater in Kurigram, however, continued receding on Sunday.
New Age correspondent in Lalmonirhat reported that the erosion by the Rivers Teesta and Dharla had taken a serious turn in Lalmonirhat although floodwater in the two rivers decreased.
At least 50 households have been eroded in the two rivers in northern part of the country in the past 24 hours. At least 28 households have been eroded in the Teesta at Mahishkhoncha union of Aditmari while 21 households have been eroded in the Dharla at villages Kulaghat Mogalhat villages of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila in the past 24 hours.
Besides more than 35,000 people are still waterlogged at Dhahagram-Angarpita, Saniajan, Gaddimari, Singimari, Sinduna, Patikapara and Dauabari unions of Hatibanhda; Mahishkhoncha and Plassey unions of Aditmari; and Khuniagchh, Rajpur, Gokunda, Mogalhat, and Kulaghat unions of Sadar upazila.
Mahishkhoncha union chairman Mosaddek Hossain Chowdhury confirmed reporters the news of damage in river erosions.
He said some more households were still under threat of erosion.
Lalmonirhat deputy commissioner Shafiul Arif said three tonnes of rice and Tk 50,000 had been allocated for the flood victims.
Flood victims of the char areas in the Teesta and Dharla are facing acute shortage of food and drinking water. Waterborne diseases are also being spread.
‘Already 18 tonnes of rice and Tk 30, 000 have been distributed among flood victims,’ the deputy commissioner said, adding that though the flood situation improved, the erosion of rivers increased.
