Girls much ahead of boys in public exam results

Girls have been outperforming boys in terms of pass rate in Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalents examinations for the last five years and this year too they have taken the big lead over boys.
Differences between boys and girls as regards pass rate in HSC and equivalents exam in between 2014 to 2017 hovered around 1 to 2.8 percentage points but the gap sharply widened to 5.8 per cent this year, according to inter education board sub-committee statistics.
Education board-wise difference was less than 5 percentage points during 2014-2017, which also increased up to 11 percentage point, statistics shows.
Girls go out less than the boys do and they study more and pay more heed to their teachers and parents’ advices, which help them pass the exam in greater number, board officials have found.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid said that that girls’ performance in exams was improving was positive and encouraging.
Combined HSC and equivalents examinations results, published on Thursday, show that 69.72 per cent girls passed the exams against 63.88 boys, a 5.84 percentage points more than boys under 10 education boards — eight general, one each madrassah and technical — boards.
In 2017 exams, 70.43 per cent girls passed the exams against 67.61 per cent boys.
In 2016, 75.60 per cent girls and 73.93 per cent boys passed the exams, in 2015 70.23 per cent girls and 69.04 per cent boys and in 2014, 78.86 per cent girls and 77.86 per cent girls passed the same exam.
Girls’ performance board-wise also improved
significantly. This year, 72.69 per cent girls passed Rajshahi board which was 11.29 percentage points more than boys’ pass rate of 61.40 per cent.
While, 76 per cent girls passed the exam under Barisal board which was 10.65 percentage points higher than boys’ pass rate of 65.35 per cent.
Again, 65.45 per cent girls passed the exam under Jessore board which was 9.74 percentage points more than boys. In technical education board, 81.60 per cent girls passed the HSC vocational exam which was 8.62 percentage points more than boys.
In Dinajpur board, 64.51 per cent girls passed the exam which was 8.29 percentage points more than the boys’ pass rate.
Girls are also doing better in Secondary School Certificate and equivalent exams as the pass rate for girls was 78.85 per cent and for boys 76.71 in 2018.
In the same exams, 80.78 per cent girls and 79.93 per cent boys passed the exam in 2017 and 88.39 per cent girls and 88.20 per cent boys passed the exams in 2016.
Barisal board exam controller Biplab Kumar Bhattacharya and Jessore board exam controller Madhab Chandra both said that girls’ performance was gradually increasing each year.
Girls study more than boys do at home and they are more attentive than boys in classes that help them perform better, Biplab thinks.
Attitude towards girls’ education changed a lot, so girls outnumbered in enrolment and outperformed their boy peers in terms of results at primary and secondary level, he said.
Girls now account for 54 per cent of secondary enrolment, 51 per cent of primary enrolment and 40 per cent of higher education enrolment, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics.
Government officials said that positive development in girls’ enrolment occurred because of some specific government interventions focusing on girls, such as stipends and exemption of tuition fees for girls, and stipend scheme for girls at the secondary level.
