Sakib withdraws from CPL amid criticism

Bangladesh Twenty20 skipper Sakib al Hasan on Wednesday withdrawn his name from the forthcoming Caribbean Premier League, scheduled to start from August 8.
The decision of his withdrawal from the CPL Twenty20 tournament came days after the Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan had raised question about Sakib’s willingness to play Test cricket.
The BCB boss came up with the suggestion that top Bangladeshi players like Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman were reluctant to play longer version matches.
He was especially critical of Mustafiz, who injured his left toe during last Indian Premier League and missed Bangladesh’s Twenty20 series against Afghanistan and Test series against West Indies.
He also indicated that the BCB would not allow the star pacer to any franchise-based Twenty20 league in the next two years.
Amid concerns about players’ burn out, the BCB last year had decided that no Bangladeshi player would be given permission to play more than two foreign Twenty20 leagues.
Sakib played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL this year and also took his NOC for Pakistan Super League, though he missed the tournament due to injury.
Sakib was picked by Barbados Tridents for $1, 30,000 for this year’s tournament, but the franchise on Wednesday confirmed that he had withdrawn from the tournament.
It, however, did not elaborate the reason for Sakib’s abrupt withdrawal.
Tridents announced former Australian skipper Steve Smith as the replacement of Sakib.
‘It is a huge blow to lose Sakib for the tournament but in Steve Smith we have a truly world-class replacement who can help to bring power to our batting lineup,’ Tridents coach Robin Singh said.
