Five children killed in Cox’s Bazar landslides

Five children, including four of the same family, were killed and three others were injured in two incidents of landslide at Cox’s Bazar district town and the district’s Ramu upazila Wednesday morning due to heavy rainfall. 
The victims were identified as Morjina Akter, 15, Kafia Akter, 10, Abdul Hai, 10, and Khairunnesa, 6, children of Jamal Hossain, an expatriate to Malaysia and resident of 
Baidderghona area of Cox’s Bazar municipality area, and Morshed Alam, 6, son of Jakir Hossen of village Panerchara of Ramu Upazila.
Local people said that a big chunk of mud fell on Jamal’s house, located on the foot of a hill in Baidderghona area, while Morjina, Kafia, Hai, and Khairunnesa were sleeping inside, leaving the house totally damaged and trapping the four children inside it at around 5:00am.
The children’s mother got injured as she was working outside the house and hearing her cry local people went to the spot, rescued the five and took them to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared the four children dead.
Cox’s Bazar acting deputy commissioner Kazi Abdur Rahman told New Age that Morsed was killed and two others were injured in a landslide 
at village Panerchara of Ramu Upazila around 3:30am. 
‘The district administration has given Tk 25,000 to the families as compensation for each of the dead ones,’ he said.
‘We have also rescued 1,000 vulnerable people from risky hill points of Cox’s Bazar town and the rescued people will be provided with dry food,’ he added.
Cox’s Bazar was witnessing heavy rainfall until Wednesday afternoon and the local met office recorded 228 millimeter of rainfall till 6:00am on Wednesday.
On June 11, at least 11 people were killed at different parts of Nannerchar upazila in Rangamati and another one was 
killed at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar amid heavy rainfall, just one year after the landslide that killed 120 people in Rangamati in 2017.
