Bus strike make people suffer, selling advance tickets for Eid halted

Long-route bus operators refrained from operating buses for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday protesting at vandalism of vehicles during the ongoing student protests for safe road, causing immense sufferings to people across the country.

The operators also decided not to sell advance tickets for Eid journey which was scheduled to be started from today.

No long-route bus left and entered Dhaka from Gabtoli, Mohakhali and Saidabad bus terminals since Saturday night.

Earlier, the operators stopped running long-route buses during the daytime since Thursday.

Bangladesh Bus Owners Association earlier took decision to start selling advance tickets from today in capital’s Gabtoli, Kalyanpur and other areas to make journey from August 14.

‘When the situation will be normal we will start selling tickets,’ said Hanif Enterprise general manager Mosharref Hossain.

Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association secretary general Khandakar Enayet Ullah told New Age that on security ground the owners and workers both did not want to run their buses at night from Saturday.

People in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country are facing trouble due to lack of public transport in the streets.
Many people were seen moving on foot and some taking rickshaws to reach their destinations.

Many passengers alleged that drivers of other mode of vehicles, including rickshaw and CNG-run auto-rickshaws are charging extra fare amid the crisis.

Meanwhile, suspension of bus services across the country has put extra pressure on the railway as many are opting for the service in the absence of buses.

Following deaths of two college students in July 29, students took the streets in Dhaka and other cities demanding safe roads.
