Myanmar still continues Rohingya cleansing: NHRC chief

National Human Rights Commission chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque on Monday alleged that Myanmar was still continuing their targeted activities of Rohingya cleansing in Rakhaine state of Myanmar to achieve their vested interest.
In a press conference in the capital marking one year of the latest spell of Rohingya influx since August 25, 2017, the NHRC chairman said that the Myanmar authorities continued erecting new structures and even started developing trade zones at the places from where the Rohingyas were forced to leave.
‘Thus, it appears that Myanmar did not at all step back from its target of Rohingya cleansing,’ he said, observing that Myanmar was very much successful in doing the job.
He also expressed his hopelessness as not a single Rohingya person could be sent back to their country even after months of singing Rohingya repatriation deal between Bangladesh and Myanmar in late November 2017.
‘It is unfortunate that Myanmar state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi [on August 21] in a speech in Singapore had blamed Bangladesh for delay of Rohingya repatriation but we did not see any reaction of the Bangladesh government over the issue,’ he lamented.
He wondered if the Bangladesh foreign ministry had worked properly to address the issue.
The NHRC chief said Bangladesh would have to play an aggressive role to force Myanmar to take back Rohingyas to their homeland with due honour and rights.
Referring to China’s support to Myanmar, he said that the authorities concerned could make China understand Bangladesh’s potentials which were much higher than those of Myanmar.
Reazul said that different international organisations including the Unite Nations did not play their role properly for sending them back to their country.
He feared that the crisis might linger for a long time.
He placed a seven-point recommendation to solve the crisis.
The recommendations include implementation of prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s five-point recommendations announced in the 72nd general assembly of the United Nations on September 21, 2017, taking stronger steps by Bangladesh government to compel Myanmar to take back the Rohingyas ensuring their citizenship, basic rights and dignity and keeping the Rohingyas in a buffer zone under the care of the UN until the destroyed houses of the Rohingyas in Myanmar were reconstructed.
He also recommended bringing the perpetrators of genocide, crimes against humanity and rapes to justice and the UN would have to take the responsibility.
NHRC members Meghna Guhathakurata and Enamul Huq Chowdhury also spoke.
