Tofail warns against election foiling attempts

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed on Tuesday said those who would create chaos and try to foil the election would be dealt in a harsh way.
He also said, ‘Today the Election Commission secretary announced that the election will take place on the last week of December and I want to remind again that the election will be held as per the constitution under this government and election commission will conduct it.’
The minister was addressing as the chief guest in a programme of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries at the FBCCI auditorium to mark the National Mourning Day in the afternoon.
Tofail also said its parties free choice to take part or not to take part in the polls but election must be held in a free and fair way.
He said, ‘The boycott of the next general election will be a political wrong decision for BNP and their existence will be at stake.’
The minister also said they want every political party would take part in the polls.
While sharing his experiences with Bangabandu Sheikh Muhibur Rahman, he said Bangabandhu was a very visionary leader who dreamt to make the country a developed one where nobody would remain poor and deprived.
‘Bangabandhu took very important initiatives in commerce and diplomacy for the betterment of the country but his enemies did not want him to continue the triumph and that’s why they killed him’, the minister said.
Mentioning Bangabandhu’s participation in election in 1970 under the Legal Framework Order in then Pakistan, he said ‘Participating election helps to organise a party and despite chance of unsatisfactory result in the election under LFO, Bangabandhu competed that and as a result, he could organise the whole country.’
The minister asked the present political parties to follow the path of Bangabandhu and participate in the next national election.
Chairman of University Grants Commission Professor Abdul Mannan, former governor of Bangladesh Bank, Atiur Rahman, FBCCI president Md Shafiul IslamMohiuddin, former president of FBCCI, Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmad also addressed, among others, the programme.
