Tough programmes ahead to free Khaleda: Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the party would go for tough programmes to free the party’s jailed chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The next general election would not be acceptable if BNP did not join it, he said at a news conference at the party’s central office in Dhaka.
Answering a question from a journalist about BNP’s conditions on joining elections, Fakhrul said his party’s first condition was the unconditional release of Khaleda Zia.
Khaleda was jailed for five years in a corruption case on February 8 this year.
BNP’s conditions also include a poll-time neutral government, dissolution of parliament, restructuring Election Commission, and measures to ensure equal opportunities for all parties and deployment of army during the election, said Fakhrul.
He said the next parliamentary election would be
very crucial and the government must shoulder the responsibility to make the election acceptable and fair.
At the news conference BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced to hold a public meeting in Dhaka on September 1 to mark the party’s 40th founding anniversary.
He said they had already applied for permission to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan or Naya Paltan at 3:00pm.
BNP would hold a discussion at the Engineers’ Institution in Dhaka on September 2 as part of the founding anniversary celebration programmes, Rizvi said.
Ziaur Rahman established BNP on September 1 in 1978.
The party’s flag would be hoisted atop at BNP’s central and branch offices across the country at 6:00am and wreaths will be placed at the grave of Ziaur Rahman at 11:00am and prayer sessions would be held on September 1.
