No EVM, no RPO amendment, BNP asks EC

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday asked the Election Commission to refrain from its move to amend the Representation of the People Order to make the use of Electronic Voting Machines possible in next parliamentary election likely to be held in December.
The EC’s hurried move to use EVM was ill-motivated and intended to manipulate election results, the party leaders claimed.
Two senior BNP leaders
came up with the remarks at two different programmes in the city.
On Tuesday EC secretary Hellaluddin Ahmed confirmed that the commission was mulling over using EVMs in 100 constituencies in the upcoming general election.
BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said they would not accept the use of EVMs.
He asked the Election Commission to refrain from its ‘ill-attempt’ to amend the RPO and use of EVMs.
He warned the commission of facing trial at people’s court if it would finally implement its plan.
Mosharraf was addressing a discussion on the use of EVMs organised by Swadhinata Forum at the National Press Club.
The standing committee member said using EVM was another tactic of the ruling party to win in the election as it knew for certain that it had no chance to win if people could use their voting rights freely.
Supreme Court lawyer Kayser Kamal presented the key note paper at the discussion addressed, among others, by Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, JSD (Rob) general secretary Abdul Malek Ratan and BNP joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal.
It was presided over by Swadhinata Forum president Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah.
Meanwhile, BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing at the party’s central office on Wednesday claimed that the Election Commission’s decision to use EVM was ‘ill-motivated.’
He said the commission was working according to the wish of the government.
Rizvi said opposition parties in India asked the Election Commission of the country two days ago to scrap EVMs.
Storm of criticism was blowing across the world against the use of EVMs, Rizvi claimed.
Results of election could be changed using EVM within a moment, he said.
