PM rejects dialogue to establish one-party rule: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the prime minister ruled out the possibility of any discussion with BNP to hold on to power using the state machinery and to establish ‘one-party rule.’
Talking to journalists at programme in Dhaka, Fakhrul said prime minister Sheikh Hasina frustrated the nation by dismissing the possibility of discussion among the major political parties ahead of general election, likely to be held in December.
Holding a free and fair parliamentary election under a neutral government was the demand of people, he claimed.
The secretary general said people expected positive response from the prime minister about democracy and participatory election, but the prime minister did not cared about the public opinion.
Fakhrul was talking to the journalists at the Supreme Court after attending a programme titled ‘Bangladesh Youth Parliament 2018’ organised by Youth Forum at Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium.
Earlier in the morning, the secretary general at a news briefing complained that BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman was being ‘obstructed’ from returning home by implicating him in cases on ‘false’ charges.
Tarique has been staying in London since September 2008.
The news briefing at BNP’s central office at Naya Paltan was held in memory of the release of Tarique from detention.
He was arrested in March 2007 during the army-backed caretaker government and released on September 3, 2008.
Fakhrul said this time BNP could not properly observe the day due to present political situation in the country.
He said the present government had implicated Tarique in the August 21 grenade attack case with a ‘vindictive streak’.
Fakhrul said ‘innocent’ Tarique was the victim of ‘grudge’ of the Awami League government.
