Ruling AL finding way to flee, says Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday called the government a coward for filing cases in advance to get BNP leaders and activists arrested across the country during the national election likely to be held in December.
Fakhrul made the remarks at two programmes in Dhaka city.
‘What a coward the government is. It is filing cases in advance across the country in each village, union and ward in Dhaka city to arrest BNP leaders and activists during the next parliamentary polls,’ said Fakhrul.
He claimed that the ruling Awami League was now searching for a way to flee as it became isolated from people and politically bankrupt.
At a commemoration meeting at National Press Club, Fakhrul said that the Awami League became tremendously frightened and was thus resorted to unlawful and undemocratic courses to check its defeat in the next parliamentary polls.
Mentioning that the tone adopted by Indian newspapers was different now-a-days, he said that former Indian high commissioner in Dhaka Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty recently wrote in an  article that it would be a ‘shameful’ defeat for Awami League if a fair and neutral election was held in Bangladesh.
The government had given up all norms, conscience and democratic values to prevent this reality from materialising, he said, adding that it could not finally protect it.
Jatiya Party (Zafar) organised the commemoration meeting to mark the third anniversary of death of the late party chairman Kazi Zafar Ahmed.
Fakhrul said that the jailed BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, being severely sick, had finally urged not to stop the current movement for democracy and that Khaleda would not compromise.
The BNP leader said that Kazi Zafar Ahmad was a great leader and although he had changed his political identity at times due to political reasons, he never isolated himself from the people.
Fakhrul said that the BNP-led alliance would have been stronger had Zafar been with them now.
Presided over by JP secretary general Mostafa Zamal Haider, the meeting was also addressed,
among others, by LDP secretary general Redwan Ahmed, NPP chairman Fariduzzaman Farhad, JAGPA general secretary Khandaker Lutfar Rahman, DL general secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Moni and Bangladesh NAP secretary general Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan.
At a views-exchange meeting with freedom fighters of Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal, Fakhrul said that Awami League and its government’s defeat had started and they were making a final attempt to stop BNP and people from uniting through the wholesale filing of cases against BNP leaders and activists across the country and implicating them in incidents staged by law enforcement agencies, he said.
Muktijoddha Dal, BNP’s freedom fighter wing, organised the programme on the role of freedom fighters in the battlefield under the present political situation of the country at BNP central office.
Fakhrul said, ‘The prime minister was trying to hold a so-called election to cling to power.’ He warned that people would not accept the general election without participation of the opposition.
He believed that a national unity would be formed soon and the nation would free democracy and the BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia.
Fakhrul said that greater unity could not be forged if the stakeholders did not sacrifice something.
Presided over by Muktijoddha Dal president Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat, the meeting was addressed, among others, by BNP leaders Hafizuddin Ahmed, Abdus Salam and Muktijoddha Dal leaders.
