Division-1 jail facilities to Shahidul upheld

Acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam’s division 1 in jail remained undisturbed as the Appellate Division on Monday dropped the government’s appeal to stay his legitimate jail facilities from the list of matters to be heard.

Appellate Division’s vacation judge-in Chamber Justice Muhammad Imman Ali, however, directed the government to file a regular appeal with copy of the High Court Division’s order.

Later, attorney general Mahbubey Alam told New Age that the government would file the regular appeal after getting a certified copy of the High Court Division’s order.

Lawyer Sara Hossain told  reporters that Shahidul Alam’s current jail facilities would remain undisturbed for now.

Her junior Jyotirmoy Barua told New Age that the government’s prayer to stay division 1 facilities to an internationally acclaimed personality ‘surprised everyone.’

He called it unprecedented for the government to oppose division 1 jail facilities granted to Shahidul Alam by the High Court Division though normally the jail authorities would have extended him the facilities he was entitled under the jail code but for the government’s undue interference.

He said that the government’s appeal against Shahidul Alam’s division 1 jail facilities set a  bad precedence.

On the night of August 5, Shahidul Alam was picked up by the Detective Branch at his Dhanmondi residence and they took him to the DB office and interrogated him using physical and mental tortures.
