BNP places action plan in today’s rally

Bangladesh Nationalist Party is finally set to hold its public meeting today at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital where it will announce its action plan keeping in view the 11th parliamentary polls likely to be held in December.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Saturday gave BNP permission to hold the rally on 22-point conditions, said BNP assistant organising secretary Abdus Salam Azad.
He along with the party’s publicity secretary Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie went to DMP headquarters Saturday morning and received the written letter of permission for holding the public meeting.
Among the conditions are ending the rally by 5:00pm, making no provocative statement or distributing no leaflets in the rally, not gathering at the venue in procession, not carrying sticks and setting up sound system outside the venue, according to Salam.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is likely to present the party’s policy statement at the meeting the date of which was changed more than once following denial of police permission.
The main opposition party would reiterate its demands for holding an inclusive, free and fair general election at rally set to start at 2:00pm.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing at the party’s central office on Saturday formally announced the rally and its venue and time.
Earlier on September 24, BNP had announced that it would hold the public meeting either at Suhrawardy Udyan or Nayapaltan in front of the party’s central office on September 27.
As Dhaka Metropolitan Police did not give BNP the permission for its September 27 rally, saying that it was a working day, the party in consultation with the DMP authorities fixed September 29, a weekend, for the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.
Police also did not give BNP the permission for holding the rally on September 29 on another excuse, the party leaders said.
Earlier on September 1, BNP held a public meeting at Nayapaltan in front of its central office, marking the party’s 40th founding anniversary.
On September 26, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a news briefing at the party’s central office said that the party leaders would deliver policy-oriented statements at the planned public meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan as well as future course of action from the rally.
At the day’s briefing, Rizvi alleged that police attacked a BNP procession in Cox’s Bazar on Friday and arrested several leaders and activists.
He alleged that 28 leaders and activists were arrested in Kushtia.
Rizvi claimed that 11 ‘ghost’ cases were filed with Banshal thana in Dhaka city when the accused — Bangshal thana Chhatra Dal leader Jewell Shikdar and the thana unit BNP vice-chairman Md Masum — had died.
He alleged that recently a total of 58 ‘ghost’ cases were filed against 3,740 named and 5,700 unnamed leaders and activists in 18 districts and metropolitan cities including Sherpur, Tangail, Dinajpur, Narayanganj, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Comilla, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Sirajganj, Rajshahi city, Khulna city and Habiganj.
Rizvi strongly condemned and protested at police attack and demanded immediate release of the arrested leaders and activists and withdrawal of all ‘false’ cases.
