Two weeks needed to start Khaleda’s treatment: physicians

Physicians at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Monday said it will take at least two weeks to begin treatment of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia as she suffers from prolonged rheumatoid arthritis along with diabetes.

The medical board reconstituted at the court order at a briefing said the main health problem of Khaleda is rheumatoid arthritis or pain in different bone joints and she is also suffering from diabetes, hypertension and other health complications.

‘At least two weeks are needed to start her main course of treatment as the treatment depends on the conditions of her major organs like heart, liver and kidney ,’ said MA Jalil Chowdhury, head of the medical board formed to treat Khaleda Zia.

He said they cannot tell now how long Khaleda Zia needs to stay at the hospital.

‘Due to prolonged rheumatoid arthritis, deformity develops in her left hand, her left shoulder becomes frozen. Her left hip joint and the knees are suffering from arthritis. She has diabetes, hypertension and painful urination,’ he said after the 5-member medical visiting her on Monday afternoon.

‘Before starting her key treatment (of rheumatoid arthritis), her other health conditions should be checked,’ he said. Medicines of rheumatoid arthritis cannont be given if her heart condition, liver condition, kidney condition and diabetes are not well’, he said.

‘We need to asses her overall health condition and it will take at least two weeks,’ Jalil said.

The assessment process is on, he added.

Jalil said the previous treatment she was receiving will continue alongside physiotherapy.

Ailing Khaleda was admitted to the BSMMU hospital on Saturday after languishing nine months at the old Dhaka Central Jail since February 8 in a case of graft allegation, she and her party denied and dubbed as ‘politically motivated’.
