Zafrullah offers apology to Gen Aziz over talk-show remark

Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and one of trustees Zafrullah Chowdhury at press conference on Saturday offered apology to the chief of army staff for choosing wrong word and providing information about him at a television talk show.

Zafrulllah said he had attended a talk-show on Somoy TV in a tired condition after getting his regular dialysis of his kidneys and provided some wrong information about the army chief.

‘Actually, the army chief never served as general officer commanding or commandant at Chittagong Cantonment. Rather, once,   he was a trainer of artillery in Chattogram … And he faced no court-martial, a court of inquiry was conducted against him,’ said Zafrullah at the news conference at Gonoshasthaya Kendra Nagar Haspatal in Dhanmondi.

He said he had already made statements before several media on his fault and had convened the news conference for a final resolution to the issue.

‘I had no intention to malign the military or General Aziz. I am proud of the pride of our army. I had passed time with military officers during the war of independence, shared their joys and woes and after the war had started Combined Military Hospital at Comilla. Later, I and Dr Azizur Rahman established Dhaka Combined Military Hospital,’ Zafrullah said.

‘I had no intention to defame General Aziz. Rather in open mind, I had said that the responsibility of the acts of his younger brother Josephs, a listed criminal, does not lie in him and it was the president Abdul Hamid who had pardoned him.

‘If I had hurt General Aziz unwillingly, I am offering apology again,’ he said.
