AL men, law enforcers on extortion spree: BNP

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday alleged that ruling Awami League men and law enforcers were now celebrating ‘grand festivals of extortion’ everywhere centring Eid-ul-Fitr.
At a briefing at the BNP central office, BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon
said that tyranny of extortionists had been increased everywhere and the government failed to stop it.
He urged the government to take steps so that holidaymakers could go home safely to celebrate Eid with their near and dear ones.
Ripon also asked the police to remain alert to law and order during Eid in the cities particularly in the capital as various crimes usually took place as many city dwellers left Dhaka during Eid.
He said that the exchange of Eid greetings between Awami League president Sheikh HAsina, also the prime minister, and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was ‘significant’ against the backdrop of present politics of confrontation.
People do not want to consider the exchange of Eid cards between the chiefs of the two main political parties as a matter of courtesy only as politics was heading for confrontation and democracy was in crisis.
He hoped that political parties would not engage in delivering hostile statement to pollute environment after Eid.
The BNP leader urged the government to release the opposition leaders and activists so that they could celebrate Eid with their families.
In reply to a question, he said that the health condition of acting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, released on bail on Tuesday, was not good.
He said that Fakhrul would go abroad for better treatment.
Earlier, a joint meeting of BNP and its associate organisations with Ripon in the chair was held in the party office to make Khaleda’s Eid reception programme a success.
Ripon said that Khaleda would hold the reception on the Eid day at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.
She would exchange Eid greetings with foreign diplomats and chiefs of international organisations stationed in Dhaka from 11:30am to 12:15pm while with people of different professions from 12:15pm to 1:15pm.
BNP leaders Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Abdus Salam Azad, Masud Ahmed Talukdar, Olama Dal president Abdul Malek, Sramik Dal president Anwar Hossain, Matshajibi Dal president Rafiqul Islam Mahtab and Chhatra Dal office secretary Abdus Satter Patwary, among others, were present.
