PM seeks blessings of Islamists

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday sought blessings of Islamist leaders and religious persons ahead of the national elections.

Addressing a thanksgiving gathering hosted by Al Haiyatul Uliya Lil Jamiyatil Quamia Bangladesh at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Sunday, she said her government recognised dawra-e-hadith degree as mastes equivalent degree of Islamic Studies and Arabic as the graduates from qaumi madrassahs helped spreading the message that Islam is a religion of peace.

Speakers at the event urged the prime minister to reward the Hefazat-e-Islam chief Shah Ahmad Shafi with Swadhinata Padak next year.

They also branded the prime minister as ‘Qaumi Janani’ for her contribution in recognising the traditional Islamic seminaries.

Citing that the Saudi king had assured her about supporting construction of 560 model mosques across the country, Hasina said that the mosques will serve as the training centers for ulema and mosque imams.   

Recalling her slain martyred family members, Hasina said that Qaumi madrassahs played crucial role in sheltering orphans. As an orphan, she sought ‘dua’ of the ulema.

She also said that land of Bangladesh would not be allowed for extremists and terrorists.

The programme was chaired by Ahmad Shafi, while home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, PM’s defense and security adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique, Awami League religious affairs secretary Sheikh Abdullah, Fariduddin Maswood, Hefajat-e-Islam organiser Ashraf Ali, among others, spoke.
