Level playing field before symbol allocation: EC

The Election Commission secretary Helaluddin Ahmed on Wednesday said that the level playing field for next general election would be ensured for all parties as well as candidates before the allocations of electoral symbols.

Addressing a press conference at his office, the EC secretary said that the commission would give necessary directives to the high officials of police from a special law and order meeting set to be held Thursday at the Nirbachon Bhaban in the capital.

He also said that the police would be instructed about their duties before and after the December 30's general election to ensure a peaceful environment.

He said the EC also will ask police to recover illegal arms and ensure security of minority groups, women voters, polling officials, electoral materials and polling stations.

He said that another law and order meeting would be held after allocating electoral symbols among the candidates on December 10.

Replying to query about BNP's allegation of arresting and disappearing its nomination seekers by law enforcement agencies, Helaluddin said that the issue would be discussed in an EC meeting on Thursday.

He also said that law enforcement agencies would be instructed not to arrest any BNP leaders and activists newly.

According to the electoral law, candidates are officially allowed to start electioneering after returning officer allocated electoral symbol among them.
