EC validates 78 more aspirants

At least 78 more aspirants, including opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s 21 and ruling Awami League’s one, on Friday got their candidature reinstated as Election Commission declared their nomination papers valid after hearing petitions for the second consecutive day.
The commission, however, rejected 65 petitions and kept decisions in seven other petitions pending.
BNP got back their single candidate for Shariatpur 1 constituency as the commission declared nomination paper of Sardar AKM Nasir Uddin valid overruling the decision of the returning officer.
BNP on Thursday got back their single candidates in four constituencies    — Bogura 7, Jamalpur 4, Manikganj 2 and Dhaka 1 — after EC’s first day hearing.
Meanwhile, 12 independent aspirants got back their candidature, while eight of Jatiya Party, four of Hasanul Haque Inu-led Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, two of ASM Abdur Rob-led Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, one each of Gano Forum, Liberal Democratic party, Bangladesh Islamic Front and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, six each of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Zaker Party, five of Communist Party of Bangladesh, two each of Islami Oikya Jote, Bangladesh Nationalist Front and Khelafat Majlish, three of National Peoples’ Party aspirants got their candidatures validated by EC on the day.
Gano Forum aspirant former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria’s son Reza Kibria also got back his candidature for Habiganj 1 constituency.
EC, however, turned down petitions of removed Jatiya Party secretary general Ruhul Amin Hawlader of Patuakhali 1, Abu Zafar Jahid Hossain of Mymensingh 4 and Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarkar of Kurigram 4 who challenged the decisions of the returning officers that cancelled their nomination paper during scrutiny.
The 21 BNP candidates who had their candidature validated by EC are Mohammad Zia Uddin and Abdul Khaleque of Brahmanbaria 6, Muslim Uddin of Brahmanbaria 4, Abu Ahmed Hasnat of Chattogram 7, Matiar Rahman Talukder of Barguna 1, Golam Nabi Alamgir of Bhola 1, Shahidul Alam Talukder of Patuakhali 2, AKM Moazzem Hossain of Dhaka 16, Khaled Saifullah Sohel Khan of Kishoreganj 1, Mainul Islam Khan of Manikganj 2, Md Abdullah of Munshiganj 1, Nadira Akter of Madaripur 1, Fahima Hussain Jubilee of Dhaka 1, Saiful Islam Sumon of Kishoreganj 3, Mamun Mahmud of Narayanganj 4, Ebadur Rahman Chowdhury of Moulvibazar 1, Dewan Joynul Zakereen of Sunamganj 4, Nur Mohammad Khan of Tangail 6, Sardar AKM Nasir Uddin of Shariatpur 1, Rashiduzzaman Millat  of Jamalpur 1 and Abu Taher Talukder of Netrakona 5.
EC, the appellate authorities, declared AL aspirant Zakir Hossain of Kurigram 4 valid, overruling the decision of the returning officer.
It also declared the candidacy of 12 independent aspirants valid for running the 11th parliamentary polls slated of December 30.
The valid independent candidates include Gias Uddin and Md Saifullah of Brahmanbaria 2, Hasan Mahmud Chowdhury of Chattogram 8, AK Faizul Haque and Syed Rubina Akter of Barishal 2, Mohammad Gias Uddin of Narayanganj 4, Abul Kashem and Ashraful Islam of Tangail 6, Al Amin Mollah of Madaripur 2, Abdul Hannan of Habiganj 1, Mahmud Hasan Sumon of Mymensigh 8 and Shafiqul Islam of Patuakhali 2.
The eight Jatiya Party valid candidates are Khorshed Alam Khushu of Chandpur 5, Masud Parvez (film actor Sohel Rana) of Barishal 2, Salauddin Khoka of Narayanganj 4, Mahmuda Rahman Munni of Dhaka 8, Amanat Hossain of Dhaka 16, Selim Uddin of Sylhet 5, Ershad Hossain of Kishoreganj 2 and SM Abdul Mannan of Manikganj 2.
The six Islami Andolan Bangladesh valid candidates are Md Sultan Ahmmad Khan of Dhaka 3, Md Salauddin of Kishoreganj 2, Mohammad Musa Khan of Kishoreganj 6, Abdul Latif Miah of Tangail 8, M Habibullah of Mymensingh 1 and Amanullah Sarkar of Mymensingh 11.
The four Inu-led JSD valid contestants are Jaidul Kabir of Narsingdi 2, Jahirul Haque Mandol Bacchu of Gazipur 3, Selina Sultana of Kishoreganj 5 and Kumaresh Chandra Ray of Rangpur 2.
The six Zaker Party valid contenders are Abdur Rashid of Patuakhali 1, Md Badsha Mia of Barishal 1, Md Badal Kazi of Shariatpur 2, Md Shahnewaz of Madaripur 1, Shamsuddin Ahmed of Dhaka 1 and Jahirul Islam of Mymensingh 5.    
The five CPB valid ones are Sushanta Bhaoyal of Shariatpur 3, Nurul Islam of Kishoreganj 2, Enamul Haque of Kishoreganj 3, Sukanta Shafi Chowdhury of Dhaka 2 and Ataur Rahman of Faridpur 4.
The other valid candidates are Gano Forum’s Reza Kibria of Habiganj 1, LDP’s MA Karim Abbasi of Netrakona 1, Islami Oikya Jote’s Altaf Hossain of Cumilla 1 and MA Matin Chowdhury of Sylhet 5, Khelafat Majlish’s Syed Mujibur Rahman of Tangail 7, Saifuddin Ahmed Khandaker of Dhaka 18, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish’s Md Azizul Haque of Sunamganj 4, NPP’s Mamunur Rahman of Tangail 6, SM Chan Miah of Tangail 3, Md Delowar of Sunamganj 4,   Bangladesh Islamic Front’s SM Sarwar of Dhaka 8, Rob-led JSDs’ Abdur Rahman of Kishoreganj 1 and Shahiduddin Mahmud of Dhaka 18, and BNF’s Ataur Rahman Khan of Tangail 3 and Sultan Mahmud of Tangail 6.
The seven aspirants whose fate were kept pending are BNP aspirants Amanullah Aman of Dhaka 2 Afroza Abbas of Dhaka 9 and Sultan Ahmed of Dhaka 20, Islami Okya Jote aspirant Mehdi Hasan of Brahmanbaria 5, BML aspirant Syed Shah Mubassir Ali of Sunamganj 3, and independent aspirants CM Sadique of Rangpur 1 and Afroza Bari Shahbaz of Gaibandha 1.
Out of 65 rejected petitions, seven were filed against the validity of nomination papers.
In the first day’s hearing on Thursday, EC validated nominations of 80 candidates, including 39 of BNP.
The commission will hear the rest 233 appeals including — three of BNP jailed chairperson Khaleda Zia, one of Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon challenging validity of BNP’s Mirza Abbas’s nomination and one of Progotishil Ganatantrik Party candidate Sabbir Ahmed against HM Ershad —today, the last day of hearing.
During the scrutiny, a total of 786 nomination papers including 141 ones of BNP and three of AL aspirants were turned down on Sunday.
