Mahbub accuses CEC of hurting commissioner’s existence

Election commissioner Mahbub Talukdar on Wednesday said that chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda hurt the existence of an election commissioner by accusing him of lying for saying that there was hardly any level playing field in the December 30 general election.
Mahbub in a written statement said, ‘Honourable chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda in Rangamati on December 18 said that I made a lie saying “There was no level playing field in the elections.” I am strongly protesting at the comment statement because he has hurt the existence of an election commissioner. It needs to be kept in mind that all the CEC and all other election commissioners are equal.’
Mahbub said that the Nurul Huda had earlier made many negative remarks about him but he never protested against those.
‘I could not but protest his statement that I lied saying “There was no level playing field in the elections”,’ he stated.
‘Replying to journalists’ queries on December 17, I said that the journalists would get the answer if they asked their conscience if there was any level playing field in the elections. Still I request all concerned to judge on their own and ask their conscience if there is any level playing field,’ the statement read.
Nurul Huda at a meeting in Rangamati on Tuesday claimed to have ensured
level playing field and that the situation was under control of the Election Commission.
He came up with the claim a day after Mahbub said that he did not think that any level playing
field existed in reality and it became a meaningless jargon.
Nurul Huda said that more than 3,600 candidates submitted their nominations to contest the 11th parliamentary elections and 1,846 of them were now in the race.
Aspirants were holding rallies, pasting posters, distributing leaflets and none was hindering them, he claimed.
The differences of opinion in the commission emerged with 11 days left for Bangladesh going to the polls on December 30.
