Dr Kamal seeks ‘positive action’ from Delhi

Opposition alliance Jatiya Oikya Front top leader Dr Kamal Hossain on Friday sought ‘positive action’ from India as he said the government was going to hold a ‘farce’ in the name of election on December 30.
Speaking at a news conference at the alliance office at Paltan, he said, ‘I will seek people of Delhi to look into the situation in Bangladesh.’
‘I expect positive action from India,’ he said, remembering India’s ‘support to the people of Bangladesh’ in 1971.
‘Wha the government is doing, it’s a farce in the name of election,’ he said.
‘But we are participating in the election only not to give the government a free hand to enjoy power as they did in the last five years without elections,’ Kamal said.
Kamal said the United Nation’s Human Rights Commission’s Thursday’s statement echoed his voice.
The UN Human Rights Commission’s special rapporteur on Thursday called for ‘urgent action’ saying that UN human rights experts are ‘alarmed’ by violence ahead of election.
‘UN experts have expressed alarm about political violence, restrictions on freedom of expression and the rise of religious fundamentalism in Bangladesh ahead of general elections on 30 December,’ said a release of the office of UN Human Rights High Commissioner.
Kamal Hossain made the call to India for its support on the back of his series of allegations of attacks, obstructions and intimidation on opposition candidates and their supporters by the ‘ruling Awami League and police’.
‘The attacks, intimidation and obstruction on opposition candidates and supporters are preplanned and concerted by police and ruling party men. These are happening with the directives from top leadership of the government,’ Kamal alleged.
‘This is unprecedented… I’ve never seen such situation in my 50 years of political career,’ he said.
He demanded immediate stop of the attacks and said, ‘Still there are seven days ahead of election. Stop it now, immediately.’
‘Come to your sense. Be cool down. You need to win the election but not this way,’ Kamal told the government.
The JOF announced to hold a grand rally in the capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan on December 27, three days before the December 30 general election.
