Farashuddin report not published as CID probe on: minister

Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday told parliament that the probe report on the Bangladesh Bank reserve heist was not made public to avert influence on the ongoing investigation into it by the Criminal Investigation Department.
The minister made the remarks in a statement on a matter of public importance under Rule 300 of the Rules of Procedure.
Former Bangladesh Bank governor Mohammed Farashuddin carried out the much-talked-about inquiry into the theft of $101 million from the central bank reserve account in the New York Federal Reserve in February 2016.
In April 2016, the probe report was submitted to immediate part finance minister AMA Muhith.
Mustafa Kamal said that the criminal investigation by CID over the reserve hest was going on.
He also said that a case was filed by the central bank in time in New York for recovering the stolen reserve.
On January 31, the Bangladesh Bank filed the case against Rizal Commercial Banking Corp of Philippine.
Mustafa Kamal said that the government already brought back $20 million from Sri Lanka and $14.63 million from the Philippines.
He said that efforts to bring back the rest of the stolen fund continued and developments over the issue would be informed in parliament.
He said that the role of Bangladesh Bank was very important in the management of financial and banking sector of the country.
Mustafa Kmal said that international hackers using information technology attempted to transfer $1 billion from the Bangladesh bank accounts in New York Fed in January 2016 through 70 fake payment instructions.
After transferring of $101 million against five false payment instructions, the New York Federal Reserve did not further execute other payment instructions on suspicion, said the finance minister 
He said that the government took all steps to recover the stolen money, identifying people and institutions involved in the theft and checking theft in the future.
