HC refuses to declare English as 2nd official language

The High Court on Sunday refused to declare English as the second official language of the state after a Supreme Court lawyer pleaded it in a writ petition.
A bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razil-Al-Jalil dropped the writ petition of lawyer M Moksadul Islam from the list of cases for hearing saying that the declaration would be contradictory to the Bangla Language Introduction Act 1987.
‘We can’t force one to speak in English as a law is enacted for application of Bangla in all spheres,’ the bench told the lawyer during the hearing.
The lawyer prayed for use of English as the second official language on the ground that the English had been practicing in all sphere beside Bangla.
